Live music, masks, high-energy commedia and the trademark physical comedy of the Dell’Arte ensemble combine with the hard-edged satire of Molière to create an evening rich with the spirit of Carnival. One of Molière's most provocative and timeless works, “Tartuffe” is a biting comedy that follows a religious charlatan who takes over a family’s life until the tables are turned by virtue of his o wn excesses.
“This work has a clear contemporary resonance for our times,” said Dell’Arte’s Producing Artistic Director Michael Fields, who also plays Tartuffe in the production. “While it riffs on the theme of religious hypocrisy in a manner that could be torn from today's headlines, it also delves into the deeply human error of believing that  our values are the only right ones. As we look about at a world in conflict over ‘who is most right’, this sentiment takes on a darker tone.”
The Dell'Arte Company, in the lineage of Molière's ensemble- driven, physically performed style, will bring a classic visual feast filled with masks, monkeys, movement, and the critically acclaimed physical style that has garnered Dell'Arte an international reputation.
Directed and designed by Oakland-based Giulio Cesare Perrone, Dell’Arte Company’s “Tartuffe” was originally a co-production with the Marin Theatre Company. It was well-received and critically acclaimed during a six-week run at MTC in Winter 2006.
