Description

What is it?

This is the perfect time to take a couple of weeks and pull out of your everyday routine so you can concentrate on work that means something to you—and it’s the right environment to allow you to develop your process. A home for the actor-creator for 50 years, Dell’Arte is located in an inspiring and serene part of Northern California with easy access to rivers, redwoods, beaches and mountains that will inform and nourish your creation time.

The work will focus on developing solo performance material with a strong eye to physical characterization and acting. Whether you’re a seasoned actor, dancer, clown, circus artist, musician, or a novice looking to explore the art of solo performance, this workshop is your opportunity to make it happen.

“Michelle creates such a caring and progressive container to create work and explore in. I’ve been lucky to have worked with her for several workshops and each time she lovingly challenges me more.”

What to expect:

Michelle will guide you through a 12-day journey that blends workshop time (theater games, physical acting exercises, movement, improv), individual time (writing, marinating, processing), 1:1 coaching with Michelle, and thought-provoking discussions with the group.

In this retreat, your days will be full, but will also be flexible. The first week will be largely planned by Michelle, while the second will be guided by the flow of inspiration and needs of the participants. This is where the magic happens.

You will be working at least six hours a day—and more if you need!  Some time will be available to tend to work and/or personal concerns at home. Studios are available between 9am and 9pm. At the end of two weeks, you’ll share part of your work with an invited audience.

This isn’t just a workshop; it’s a creative process that will elevate your solo performance to new heights. The only requirement is that you bring an IDEA. It can be a prop, a movement, a lesson plan, a speech, a poem, a word, a thought.

 Your journey includes:

  • Developing skills in physical acting, storytelling, and communication.
  • Building confidence in your solo abilities.
  • Developing and leaning into your creative process.
  • Crafting material that resonates with your audience.
  • Exploring and developing unique characters.
  • Finding motivation for a personal and impactful performance.

What’s in it for you?

  • Utilize open time to work in great studios and develop your process.
  • Visit the natural wonders of Humboldt County
  • Network with like-minded artists for potential collaborations.
  • Present 15 minutes of your work-in-progress at Dell’Arte’s Carlo Theater in a showcase performance.
  • Receive a digital video of your own performance.
  • Experience personal growth beyond technical skills.
