Gurudarshan “GD” Khalsa is an active member of the Blue Lake community and long-time supporter of Dell’Arte who was a close friend of the late Joan Schirle. GD is a mostly retired family physician and a long-time yoga practitioner who in his own words is “very calm and grounded by my decades of yoga and meditation”; he anticipates that his “discerning and analytical mind” will help to bring clarity to Dell’Arte’s decision-making processes during the rebuilding of the organization.

“It’s a solid sign that the organization is headed in a positive direction when individuals of this caliber step forward to participate,” adds Bitton. “We have several other potential directors waiting in the wings and are planning a second onboarding phase later in the year.”

Head of Training Tony Fuemmeler says, “Alongside the solid blend of skills, professional acumen, organizational history and community involvement which this group embodies, we are thrilled to also have their passion for Dell’Arte and professional rural theater and training as we move forward over the next few months into our 50th year.”

Dell’Arte is in the middle of a winter term of community classes, a series of professional workshops in the next few months, and a solo performance intensive with returning faculty Michelle Matlock in March. In the Carlo, guest performances have begun with the sold-out return of Papaya Lounge this past week. There’s music aplenty coming in February, starting with Home Cookin’ and The Appliances on February 10th, and Makenu Cumbia on February 24th. This summer marks the 50th Anniversary of Dell’Arte and will feature performances, popular summer intensives, the Prize of Hope, and the Folk Life Festival. More information about all of these and more can be found on the website at www.dellarte.com.

Dell’Arte is currently seeking sponsors for summer productions and is also pleased to offer the Carlo Theatre space as a rental for third-party events. Interested businesses and individuals should contact Operations Manager Kimberly Haile at kimberly@dellarte.com.

Alyssa Hughlett | January 8, 2024 | Statement of Departure

My journey at Dell’Arte began as an MFA student and, after graduating from the program in 2015, I was hired by the school to teach acrobatics and physical training as part-time faculty. I performed, toured, and directed with my ensemble, UpLift Physical Theatre, acted and performed locally at the Arcata Playhouse, and Ferndale Repertory, and, most notably for me, co-created and performed in The Papaya Lounge, which continues strong in its sixth season this year.

When I took on the role of Interim Managing Director at Dell’Arte in late February of 2020, I had no idea just how much my life was going to change, and, for that matter, how much the world would change, and how precipitously. Much of my story, as it relates to my work in the last four years, is not visible to the community, mostly because arts administration is behind the scenes in service of the programs and artists. Yet, it can be said that administration is an art too, and I am deeply grateful – indeed joyful – for all that I have learned as a Managing Director and Executive Director/CEO.

Now the time has come to close that chapter, and for me to reclaim my artistic life, restore my physical and mental energy, and open up avenues for new personal growth. I am so appreciative of my mentors, close colleagues, and creative partners, who have seen me through some of the most difficult years I have had to navigate in my professional life. I have always valued and taken a holistic approach in my teaching, administrative, and leadership work, so now that Dell’Arte is entering a chapter of rejuvenation, I take the view that my departure helps to create space for new energy, perspectives, and growth to emerge.

I am excited to see where the Leadership Council will take Dell’Arte in its 50th year and beyond. After a short (one-month) breather, I’ll be returning to the Board, where I’m looking forward to supporting the organization’s future, both as a board member and a Blue Lake community member.

Dell’Arte International Announces Newest Board Members

BLUE LAKE, CA – Dell’Arte International’s Board of Directors today announced five new members who will help advance the nonprofit’s work of exploring theatre making, theatre training and the relationship between artist and community.

“We’re excited to expand our board with these leaders who have diverse experience and will bring an array of talents and insight to help strengthen the art of nonprofit governance at Dell’Arte,” said Managing Director Alyssa Hughlett. “We have worked purposefully to ensure our board and leadership include professionals from higher education and the arts communities, as well as long standing Humboldt County residents and award-winning alumni.”

Dell’Arte International in Summer 2020 committed to an internal racial and cultural assessment process and has moved forward with corresponding recommendations to revise term limits and recruit new board members to bring greater equity and representation to the board.

The Dell’Arte Board of Directors will continue its effort to fully develop its membership into Spring 2021. Faculty Chair Elizabeth Colón Nelson said, “We are committed to meeting and expanding our stated equity goals, and supporting a cultural transformation at Dell’Arte in order to serve and embolden a diverse and inclusive next generation of theatre makers, practitioners and community engagement artists.”

“I am personally thrilled to welcome such a strong group of leaders to the Board of Directors as Dell’Arte navigates some of the most challenging months in its nearly 50 year history,” said Bonnie Neely, former board chair who recently stepped down after 13 years of service.

The new board members began their terms, not to exceed seven years, on January 25. The new board members are:

Stephen Buescher – A graduate of Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre, CalArts, and now a TCG New Generations fellow, Stephen Buescher is a director, choreographer, actor and professor. He has worked as an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) advisor to the San Diego Repertory Theater and is chair of EDI in the Department of Theater and Dance at UC San Diego. Stephen has choreographed numerous performances at the American Conservatory Theater and recently taught master classes focusing on Black and Artists of Color for Theater Communications Group and the Craft Institute.

Issac M. Carter, Ph.D. – Isaac M. Carter is the founder and coach for the Coaching Imperative. He is a Critical Educator, DEI Strategist, Equity Coach, Leadership and Organizational Consultant, Certified EQ Practitioner & Assessor and Black Male Feminist. For over two decades, he has steered change management in for-profit and non-profit sectors. His training incorporates Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality, and Leadership Success, and Organizational Development. Dr. Carter is the co-editor of the forthcoming volume “Unhooking from Whiteness,” Sense, 2021. Issac helps individuals and institutions understand, embrace, and leverage diversity through implementing DEI strategies, team building, emotional intelligence and one-to-one cultural agility coaching.

Jeremy Michael Clark, Ph.D. – Dr. Jeremy Michael Clark holds a Ph.D. in Human Resource Development from the University of Minnesota, an M.A. in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University and a B.S. in Business Administration and General Management from Humboldt State University. He has experience in banking management and finance, consulting and served as Managing Editor for Advances in Developing Human Resources, a leading academic journal in the Human Resource Development field. Dr. Clark’s research focus is on diversity in organizations and he currently works in the Department of Human Resources for the County of Humboldt. He resides in Eureka with his wife, Haley, their two children and their beagle.

Heather Equinoss – Heather Equinoss is a collaboration doula, consultant and visual facilitator whose work is in service to a simple core belief: that the health and wellbeing of people are inextricably connected to one another and the planet that sustains us. She brings 20 years of meeting design, graphic facilitation, and community engagement experience in public, nonprofit, and community settings and specializes in supporting multi-stakeholder, multi sector collaborations. She is a partner in CoCreative Consulting and Equinoss Consulting. She and her family live on Wiyot land on the redwood coast of California.

Libby Maynard – Libby Maynard is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Ink People for the Arts, a nonprofit that connects the community to resources for cultural development. A visual artist with nearly 40 years’ experience working with community and arts organizations on the North Coast, Libby is also a nonprofit consultant. She earned a master’s degree in art from Humboldt State University and has attended Wellesley College and the International School of Bangkok in Thailand.

The Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre offers the only accredited MFA in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre in the world. Its training programs attract students from across the globe, with more than 1,000 graduates from 41 countries since the formation of the school in 1975.
We are so grateful to Lauren Wilson, our School Director of the last 5 years, faculty member, and theatre artist, for her guidance and vision. Despite hearing from many graduates and colleagues about the profound positive effect Lauren has had on their work and lives in her performance review, and a unanimous vote of confidence from our board to continue as School Director, Lauren has decided to step aside and make room for new leaders to emerge.

Dell’Arte is very happy that Lauren will stay on the faculty and continue lending her invaluable voice and instruction to our students. We thank Lauren from the bottom of our hearts for her compassionate leadership, her tireless and often invisible work, her skill as a teacher and artist, her undying commitment to our students, and her vulnerability as we embrace changes ahead.

Please find a message from Lauren below:

Dear Dell’Arte Community,

This is to let you know that I’ve decided to resign from my position as School Director at Dell’Arte, effective October 1. My plan is to stay on as a faculty member this coming school year, and I truly look forward to working with students and colleagues in that capacity.

The Dell’Arte Board of Directors recently completed a 360 review of my work, and returned a unanimous vote of confidence in me and in my job performance as School Director. In spite of their vote of confidence, which I deeply appreciate, I believe the best thing for Dell’Arte in this moment is for me to step aside and make room for others to lead. It’s time for Dell’Arte to place our racial equity goals at the center of decision-making and to embrace this as a priority, for the benefit of the artistic work, the students, the audience, and the integrity of the training itself. By stepping aside, I hope to help support and further that work through my actions as well as my words.

I’m proud of the work I’ve done as School Director, and the progress we’ve made as a school in the past five years. During that time I’ve watched the school transform, becoming a place where creativity, joy, ensemble spirit, democratic values, multiculturalism, rigor, and love for the transformative work of theatre thrived. As one of the few women ever to hold the School Director position at Dell’Arte, I hope I’ve helped set a precedent for the kind of invisible, compassionate, principled leadership which serves a community of artists and students best.

My deepest thanks go out to the Dell’Arte students and alumni, for all you’ve taught me about life and leadership during these years. I’m grateful for the trust you placed in me, for the honesty and vulnerability you brought to the work, and for the vulnerability you’ve helped me to recognize and embrace in myself. To fully practice what I preach as a teacher, it’s time for me to leap into the unknown, to trust in the ensemble and let go of part of myself, so something new can emerge.

With hope and gratitude,

Lauren

Dear Friends,

Dell’Arte is still operating at a reduced capacity due to the pandemic and we would like to thank our community for the all of the support we are receiving as we move through this together. We are taking time to recalibrate and the necessary steps to weather the storm so that when we reopen at full capacity, we can do so with strength, perspective, and energy! In previous updates, we’ve announced that we will not be conducting our Professional Training Program this year to prioritize safety. For the last several weeks, she has been attending protests in her home country of Israel with a mission to bring love and levity to the masses. Here are some words from Idit on her work:
“This clown is a police woman named ‘Straight to the Heart’. It means there is a woman in uniform that her duty is to listen to the hearts around her, to listen to her own heart, and to remind about the heart to each and everyone. She gives stickers of hearts to the crowd. She gives a spray with a potion of love (water) to anyone who wants. There are weekly big demonstrations in Jerusalem asking for change of the government and for change in general. It creates violence between the police and the citizens. The police is using force. Humor and love challenges power and uniform. She gets involved when there is violence trying to soften whats possible. At the beginning it was a bit frightening, not so much anymore. Moving towards healing.”

Way to go Idit! We wish safety and heart to all of those protesting and working for change in their own ways and take inspiration from your actions.

Photos by Rafi Michaeli, IIai Balaban, Avishag Gaya, Itai Slovatik

LIGHTS UP ON DELL’ARTE

Our Lighting Designer, Spike Foster, lit up Dell’Arte in red on September 1st for the RED ALERT DAY OF ACTION in solidarity with 1500 live performance spaces across the country who have joined in a movement to raise awareness around extending the RESTART Act.
