Alyssa Hughlett | January 8, 2024 | Statement of Departure
My journey at Dell’Arte began as an MFA student and, after graduating from the program in 2015, I was hired by the school to teach acrobatics and physical training as part-time faculty. I performed, toured, and directed with my ensemble, UpLift Physical Theatre, acted and performed locally at the Arcata Playhouse, and Ferndale Repertory, and, most notably for me, co-created and performed in The Papaya Lounge, which continues strong in its sixth season this year.
When I took on the role of Interim Managing Director at Dell’Arte in late February of 2020, I had no idea just how much my life was going to change, and, for that matter, how much the world would change, and how precipitously. Much of my story, as it relates to my work in the last four years, is not visible to the community, mostly because arts administration is behind the scenes in service of the programs and artists. Yet, it can be said that administration is an art too, and I am deeply grateful – indeed joyful – for all that I have learned as a Managing Director and Executive Director/CEO.
Now the time has come to close that chapter, and for me to reclaim my artistic life, restore my physical and mental energy, and open up avenues for new personal growth. I am so appreciative of my mentors, close colleagues, and creative partners, who have seen me through some of the most difficult years I have had to navigate in my professional life. I have always valued and taken a holistic approach in my teaching, administrative, and leadership work, so now that Dell’Arte is entering a chapter of rejuvenation, I take the view that my departure helps to create space for new energy, perspectives, and growth to emerge.
I am excited to see where the Leadership Council will take Dell’Arte in its 50th year and beyond. After a short (one-month) breather, I’ll be returning to the Board, where I’m looking forward to supporting the organization’s future, both as a board member and a Blue Lake community member.
