Bouffon Week 1:  A Satiric Ensemble of Mocking Madness and Mayhem!
Imagine a wild-eyed pack of Players, ecstatic to mock anything and everything. Ridiculous, confronting and poetic, this Satyric chorus teeters on the seesaw of fun and uncomfortable truth. To begin this journey, we focus on the role of “The Player”. Students will discover the attitude and drives of Bouffons, through:

  • Ensemble play & complicity
  • Chorus work
  • Finding the fun in mocking
  • Non-linear play
  • Investigating dynamics of objects, actions, and roles

Bouffon Week 2: Mocking in Themes
In week one, you learned the attitudes and drives of Flocking Bouffon: Wild, indulgent, unpredictable mocking. A pleasure-led party where the “The Player” dominates the room. But who’s that knocking at the door?  “The Writer!”
In week 2, we build on previous experience by choosing specific themes to mock. As we play these themes, we are watched by our supportive, fellow creators. The devising process has begun as we ask…

  • How did we play?
  • What did we make?
  • Where does this piece want to go?
  • What are we missing?
  • What does the writer want to say through the bouffon?
  • How might we make it better?

What to expect:
These two four-day intensives will be highly physical in their nature. Our studios will be open before class begins if you want to have some time to warm up beforehand. You can bring snacks and water with you to eat on breaks in our student lounge.
